From 5 January 2026, the Federal Government’s 3-Day Guarantee is now in effect, making early learning more accessible and affordable for eligible families.

At the Y Early Learning, we provide nurturing, play-based education delivered by qualified educators who support every child to grow, explore and feel valued. With the 3-Day Guarantee, it’s now easier for families to access subsidised early learning, making it a great time to enrol your child with the Y.

What is the 3-Day Guarantee?

The 3-Day Guarantee gives every eligible child at least three days (72 hours) of subsidised early childhood education and care per fortnight, regardless of parents’ work status, study, volunteering or other activities.

In summary:

  • The activity test is being removed
  • Eligible families will receive 72 hours of subsidised care per fortnight
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families will receive 100 hours of subsidised care per fortnight
  • Subsidy hours are counted over a fortnight (14 days), giving families flexibility (for example: two days one week and four days the next to reach 72 hours)

Who is eligible?

To receive the 3-Day Guarantee, families must:

  • Meet the Child Care Subsidy (CCS) eligibility criteria
  • Have a household income under the CCS income threshold
  • Meet Australian residency requirements

Subsidy amounts are still income-tested, and families may still pay a gap fee (the difference between the subsidy and the centre’s fees)

Can some families get more than 3 days?

Yes, some families may be eligible for up to 100 hours of subsidised care per fortnight, including families who:

  • Care for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander child
  • Work, study, volunteer or engage in recognised activity for more than 48 hours per fortnight
  • Have an approved exemption due to special circumstances
  • Receive Additional Child Care Subsidy (for wellbeing, temporary financial hardship, or grandparent care)

Does this mean childcare is free?

Not exactly. The 3-Day Guarantee means more subsidised hours, but families will still pay the gap fee between the subsidy and the centre’s rate, except in specific situations.
